"The Impact of Hosting the Olympics at Home is Irreplaceable"
Olympic gold, World Champion, World Hockey Player... To put it briefly: Moritz Fürste (40) is one of the most successful hockey players of all time.
In the DOSB podcast about a potential German Olympic bid, the Hamburg native discusses the allure of the Olympics and explains why Germany needs to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
At the age of three, his father handed him a hockey stick for the first time, marking the beginning of a piece of German sports history. Since childhood, Fürste, known as "Mo" to everyone, played for Uhlenhorster HC in Hamburg. However, it took a while for him to make his breakthrough. "I was always talented, but never a prodigy. I'd say I'm a late bloomer," he describes himself. At 19, he made his debut in the Bundesliga, and at 21, he played his first international match for the German national team.
Two years after his first World Cup title, Fürste made his Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008, winning gold in the final against Spain. Four years later, he claimed his second Olympic gold in London. At his third Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, he won bronze. Fürste continued to play in the Bundesliga until 2018 before ending his active career. Since then, he has ventured into marketing and entrepreneurship, serving as the managing partner of Hyrox, an international fitness competition event series.
Even after his active career, his fascination with the Games remains unbroken. Fürste experienced the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris as a fan for the first time. "There's nothing I didn't see. It was my personal paradise."
Fürste strongly supports a German Olympic bid: "It remains my great wish to experience the Olympics in my own country during my lifetime." He sees the Games as a catalyst for sports across Germany:
"If we manage to bring the Olympic Games to the country, all the discussions we have about investments in sports, infrastructure, and sports facilities will be resolved. This impact cannot be matched by anything else."
